The Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies is an individualized program designed for the graduate student who wishes to pursue interdisciplinary studies. Such a program encourages students to consider issues and problems in society, culture, literature, art, and/or communication. Students will develop comprehensive contexts for scholarly work and appropriate methodologies for such studies. Graduate students in Interdisciplinary Studies may earn a Master of Arts degree by selecting 33 hours of graduate courses from three disciplines (programs) with the approval of their major advisor and committee. Two of the three disciplines must be from the Jimmy D. Case College of Literature, Arts and Social Sciences (“Case College”). The discipline with the greatest number of semester credit hours is required to be a discipline in Case College. In addition, students will complete IS 5300 Interdisciplinary Studies Capstone Project, the successful oral and/or visual presentation of which will serve as the comprehensive exam.
At the time of entrance into the program each student must complete a degree plan with an Interdisciplinary Studies advisor and select a committee based on the student’s areas of interest. Leveling work may be required in some disciplines.

Discipline Requirements: 33 Credit Hours
Discipline 1: Choose 18 credit hours from a discipline in Jimmy D. Case College of Literature, Arts and Social Sciences (Case College), in consulation with an Interdisciplinary Studies advisor and a committee based on the student’s areas of interest.
Discipline 2: Choose 9 credit hours from a second discipline, in consulation with an Interdisciplinary Studies advisor and a committee based on the student’s areas of interest; the second discipline may be in any college as long as two of the three disciplines are chosen from Case College.
Discipline 3: Choose 6 credit hours from a third discipline, in consulation with an Interdisciplinary Studies advisor and a committee based on the student’s areas of interest; the third discipline may be in any college as long as two of the three disciplines are chosen from Case College.
Capstone Requirement: 3 Credit Hours
The successful oral and/or visual presentation of the student’s capstone project will serve as the comprehensive exam.
