Psychology B.A. Degree Requirements
These are the general requirements to earn the B.A. in Psychology:
Texas Core Curriculum: 42 Credit Hours. These hours are earned from a broad set of basic courses that all undergraduate students must complete, regardless of their major.
University-Required Courses for the B.A.: 12 Credit Hours. These hours include the one-credit-hour First Year Seminar, a course in English composition and two courses in foreign language.
Courses in the Major Field of Psychology: 36 Credit Hours. This includes 12 credit hours in four courses required of all psychology majors, plus an additional 24 credit hours of psychology courses that students select based on their particular interests.
Courses in the Minor Field: 18 Credit Hours. All psychology majors must select a minor field and complete 18 hours of courses in that field. Nine of those hours must be from upper-level courses.
General Elective Courses: 12 Credit Hours. A general elective course is any course which students choose to take that is not specifically required to satisfy the requirements of their major, minor, core curriculum, or degree. Electives give students some flexibility to take courses to explore personal interests, develop additional skills, or deepen their knowledge in areas not covered by required coursework.
Total Credit Hours: 120 credit hours must be completed to earn the B.A. in psychology.
At least 36 of the 120 total credit hours must be taken from upper-division courses (junior- and senior-level courses with 3000- and 4000-level course numbers. These are sometimes referred to as “advanced courses.”)
For students who are transfer students, at least 15 of the 36 upper-division credit hours must be completed at Sul Ross, and at least 30 total credit hours must be completed at Sul Ross.
In order to graduate, all students must have at least a 2.0 GPA in the major, in the minor, and overall.
The Texas Core Curriculum: 42 Credit Hours
The 42 credit hours from the Texas Core Curriculum are earned from a broad set of basic courses that all undergraduate students must complete, regardless of their major.
University-Required Courses for the B.A.: 12 Credit Hours
The University requires that all Sul Ross students intending to earn a B.A. must complete the one-credit-hour First Year Seminar, one course in advanced English composition, and two courses in foreign language.
Courses in the Major Field of Psychology: 36 Credit Hours
Psychology majors must complete 36 credit hours of psychology courses. This includes 12 credit hours in four courses that are required of all psychology majors, plus an additional 24 credit hours of psychology courses that students select based on their particular interests.
Required Courses in Psychology
These four psychology courses (which together consist of 12 credit hours) must all be completed to earn the B.A. degree in psychology.
Elective Courses in Psychology
Beyond the four required psychology courses, each psychology major must complete an additional 24 credit hours of elective psychology courses (typically eight courses), 9 hours of which must be at the 3000 or 4000 level, which individual students select based on their particular interests.
Courses in Minor Field: 18 Credit Hours
All psychology majors must select a minor field and complete 18 hours of course credit in that field. Nine of those hours must be in upper-level courses.
