Sul Ross offers a progression of awards that lead to achieving the M.Ed. in Education with Specialization. The progression is as follows:
- Certificate in Content Specialization-The certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete eighteen graduate hours in a core subject (e.g. Math, Spanish, History).
- Certificate in Dual Credit Advanced Pedagogy-The certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete eighteen hours in a core subject plus three hours in a dual-credit pedagogy and theory course (via education).
- M.Ed. in Education with Specialization-The full degree is awarded with the above successful completions plus a further nine semester credit hours of required education courses. The degree is a thirty-hour program.
Students are not required to follow the progression in pursuit of the M.Ed.; they can choose to take content and education coursework in tandem. In addition, students have the option of shifting to their core discipline at any point.

Area of specialization: 18 Required course: 3 Restrictive Electives: 18 Credit Hours
Students must choose, in consultation with their graduate advisor, 18 credit hours of courses at the 5000, 6000, and 7000 level in their area of specialization. Required Courses: 3 Credit Hours
