The Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies is an individualized program designed for the graduate student who wishes to pursue interdisciplinary studies. Such a program encourages students to consider issues and problems in society, the sciences, the natural world, culture, literature, art, and/or communication. Students will develop comprehensive contexts for scholarly work and appropriate methodologies for such studies. Graduate students in Interdisciplinary Studies may earn a Master of Arts degree by selecting 33 hours of graduate courses from three disciplines (programs) with the approval of their major advisor and committee. The three  three disciplines must be from programs with existing graduate-level offerings. The discipline with the greatest number of semester credit hours will serve as the anchor for the program, and a committee of faculty advisors will be represented from each of the three disciplines. In addition, students will complete IS 5300, Interdisciplinary Studies Capstone Project; the successful oral and/or visual presentation of which will serve as the comprehensive exam.

At the time of entrance into the program, each student must complete a degree plan with the primary Interdisciplinary Studies advisor and select a committee based on the student’s areas of interest. Leveling work may be required in some disciplines.
