The SRSU Spanish program offers students the opportunity to become proficient in Spanish by developing critical thinking skills through the study of literature, linguistics, artistic movements and cultures. The program offers degree tracks in teaching certification and non-certification in the study of the Spanish language, the development of communicative proficiency, and the analysis of a wide range of literary and cultural production throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
Sul Ross State University students interested in seeking teacher certification should seek additional advisement from the Department of Education. In order to be admitted to the Teacher Education Program (TEP), certain requirements - including GPA, passing a background check, and other conditions - exist. BA Spanish Student Learning Outcomes (SLO)
- Students will be able to demonstrate advanced level of comprehension in reading Spanish. Specifically, to read literary works from Spain and Latin America that include different genres: short stories, novels, plays and poetry.
- Students will be able to demonstrate advanced level of oral proficiency by expressing themselves clearly, accurately and effectively in a variety of communicative contexts and academic situations. The student will be able to communicate orally in standard Spanish according to the ACTFL Standards for Foreign Language Learning.
- Students will be able to demonstrate advanced level proficiency in writing Spanish. The student will be able to construct effective written discourse in standard Spanish using a broad range of language structures which comply to the ACTFL Standards for Foreign Language Learning.
- Students will be able to demonstrate awareness and understanding of historical, political and cultural events of Spain and Latin America. Students will be able to determine the connections between history and culture within Spanish speaking countries.
