What is history? History is the study of the change and development of human society and its institutions over time, through inquiry and investigation. The history program at Sul Ross State University offers courses in U.S. History, Native American History, Ancient and Medieval History, European History, Latin American History, World History, and Public History, encouraging students to think critically about the past as well as the present to prepare for the future. The history faculty also sponsors a chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society.

This degree is designed for students who wish to teach history at the secondary level in Texas public schools. Additionally, instead of an academic minor, students must complete Teacher Education Program coursework, offered through the Sul Ross Department of Education. The Teacher Education Program is a 24 credit hour program, which must be taken in sequence, culminating with the one-semester student teaching practicum. Students must apply for admission to the Teacher Education Program through the Sul Ross Department of Education.
