A history of Britain tracing the nation?s emergence as a great power and relative decline in the modern world. The course will treat the revolutionary settlement in the eighteenth century, the oligarchic triumph, the loss of the American colonies, the struggle with France for world hegemony, the evolution of parliamentary democracy, the impact of industrialization and urban growth, the imperial tensions, and the variety of reforms leading to the modern welfare state.
